How Does Recycling Reduce Climate Change?

Over the past couple of years, recycling has shown to be one of the most powerful tools we can all use to help slow down climate change.

Climate Change refers to a long-term change/shift in the weather we see in the world. What are referred to as average weather patterns, such as a warmer climate in the Summer and a cold climate in the Winter, begin to change and alter due to Climate Change.

We know that the planet has warmed by an average of nearly 1°C in the past century. If we are to prevent the worst effects of climate change, there is global agreement that temperature rises need to be kept well below 2°C from the pre-industrial era, with an ambition to keep it below 1.5°C. – WWF

How does Recycling help?

As the world continues to drive petrol cars and waste unwanted items, the earth gets weaker and unpredictable weather becomes more common. But as we know all too well here at Collect My Clothes, recycling can help reduce these issues.

Our goal is to stop clothes from ending up in landfills because when they do they create greenhouse gases. By reducing energy consumption, recycling unwanted items and using recycled materials to make new products we will reduce our waste and affect on the climate.

Recycling Reduces Greenhouse Gases

Most clothing is made from organic material, which means that it is derived from natural sources. Therefore, when this clothing ends up in landfills, it is not able to get the correct amount of oxygen that is needed for organic materials to break down.

Furthermore, this results in the emission of dangerous greenhouse gases that, in a landfill, are largely uncontrolled and end up escaping into the atmosphere, accelerating climate change.  So by recycling our clothing and giving it a new home, we are stopping this from happening.

Saves Space In Landfill

Landfills are crowded and every little item that we throw away (don’t recycle) needs a place to go! So when they can’t find a new home, they end up in landfill which is not what we want.

In fact every year, 12 million tons of clothing ends up in landfills where they take up a massive amount of very expensive space. The reality is that most clothing that is being thrown away can, in fact, re-enter the market in other countries where the demand for used clothing is high. And by donating your clothes with us, we can ensure poorer parts of the world, who need them the most, receive them.

Benefiting Others In Developing Countries

When you recycle your clothes with us, we ensure that developing countries who need them the most, have access to your unwanted items. Some will sell the clothing to make a living and others simply need clothing to wear. There is a huge demand for used clothing around the world and the clothes provided, allow these people to have a reliable source of income to support their families.

Overall, recycling has a huge positive impact on the environment and small little tasks like donating your unwanted clothing have incredible long-term impacts.

There is no time like the present, start your clean out today.
